TEACHING

Picture
A commitment to teaching is a commitment to being a lifelong learner. As an instructor, lifelong goes beyond being up to date on course subject matter. Lifelong learning involves learning (1) through students diverse experiences and viewpoints; (2) about different methods to meet students differing learning styles; (3) about how one's biases infiltrate how and what one teaches; (4) to be open to critique; (5) to adjust to the personality of each class. Dr. Fleary's approach to teaching is shaped by her commitment to being a lifelong learner, her experiences as a student, and her clinical experiences.

Dr. Fleary teaches each of her courses with the following goals:
1.  To foster critical thinking through innovative assignments and activities.
2.  To facilitate a learning environment that is welcoming to diverse perspectives.
3.  To create a learning environment that is responsive to multiple learning styles.
4.  To provide real world applications to encourage students to think beyond the classroom and their textbooks.
5.  To create a collaborative community of learning within the classroom.
6.  To engage students civically.
7.  To acknowledge that she is a lifelong learner.
