A commitment to teaching is a commitment to being a lifelong learner. As an instructor, lifelong learning goes beyond being up to date on course subject matter. Lifelong learning involves learning (1) through students’ diverse experiences and viewpoints; (2) about different methods to meet students’ differing learning styles; (3) about how one's biases infiltrate how and what one teaches; (4) to be open to critique; (5) to adjust to the personality of each class. Dr. Fleary's approach to teaching is shaped by her commitment to being a lifelong learner, her experiences as a student, and her clinical experiences. She is most inspired by the pedagogical works by bell hooks.
Dr. Fleary has taught in psychology, nursing, child development, and public health programs. She has taught at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
