MENTAl health literacy and well-being

Picture
Several studies have focused on adult health literacy and mental health literacy. However, no study has looked at the cumulative impact of health literacy and mental health literacy in caregivers' mental health help-seeking for themselves and their children. This study will attempt to address this gap by (1) determining the relationship between mental health literacy and health literacy in an underserved population; (2) determining the impact of the health literacy/mental health literacy relationship on caregivers' mental health help-seeking and use of services for themselves and their children; (3) identifying areas for intervention to promote mental well-being in underserved families.  The ultimate goal of the project is to develop informed, effective interventions to promote caregivers’ advocacy for their mental well-being and that of their children.
However, a first step in answering these questions is identifying a mental health literacy measure that does not require a high literacy level. This study will first develop and validate a mental health literacy measure before engaging in the goals outlined above.
